A recent research report has reported the size of the Australian ecommerce market to be $12 billion. That’s good news for business owners as it shows positive growth in Australians buying online. But there’s a flip side: the same report shows that Australians are buying on overseas websites and not here at home.
The study by US consulting company Frost & Sullivan shows that up to 40% of the online spend of Australians is on overseas shopping websites. The reasons given for this are that Australian ecommerce websites are underdeveloped compared to their international competitors – not technology wise, but in the range of products and competitive pricing policies by store owners.
There’s a big opportunity here for Australians – take your business online and cater to the huge amount of Australians that are buying online from overseas because they just can’t find what they want on an Australian site at a competitive price.
