A little bit of personalisation and some manners can do wonders to a businesses online success rates, provided you don’t go too far with it. The spirit of social media communities like Facebook and Twitter is to encourage participation and break down the barriers between businesses and individuals. Businesses want to embrace this but they are employing old world philosophies to the way they implement their online marketing strategies and as a result are turning themselves into big online advertisements rather than businesses that customers want to interact with.

If you are using Twitter and Facebook to enhance your business marketing strategy here are some quick tips of things you should consider as these could help you succeed.

  1. Don’t only post product information. Include creative thoughts, breaking news, and things that are just topical and relevant. You might even want to share a story from your company’s history or anything that your customers might find interesting.
  2. Use Images and Video. Text is great and helpful for indexing in Google, but people like to interact and visualising things is a great way to go. Do you have a new product video or TV ad? Show it. Have you received a product review that you are particularly proud of? Include it. Found something you really like on the Internet that’s relevant to your customers? Share it. You don’t have to get on there and create company cam, but a little variety in media can be helpful and interesting. Sometimes it’s easier to just show a picture of something than try to explain it.
  3. Thank people for retweets. If someone re-posts something that you have said on your blog or Twitter, then thank them for it. You are building a personal relationship with that person and they’re far more likely to do it again.  You can never have too much trust or friends in the online world and this simple act of manners should not be underestimated in the benefit it can bring you.
  4. Don’t go overboard. You don’t want to be perceived as a company that is so personal it’s unprofessional, so it’s important to strike a balance between revealing your inner self and being perceived as a company not worth dealing with. Or worse, giving your competitors too much information about how you do business. Share your philosophies and what you stand for, not every single personal detail of you and your employees’ lives.
