Published on May 24, 2012 Business owners have another social networking tool to use – Microsoft So.cl
Microsoft have announced the launch of their new social networking website, So.cl. What does it mean for you as a store owner?
At this stage, the new network is still experimental and being downplayed by Microsoft, rather than being seen as a major competitor to Facebook and another place that as a store owner you need to be. In fact, it’s targeted at students studying social media rather than mainstream consumers. Users can sign up for So.cl with a Windows Live or Facebook login.
The main difference between Socl and other networking tools like Facebook is that instead of sharing information about people and their current “state”, Socl focuses on doing searches and then sharing the resources (photos, videos, text and other media) that are returned by those searches. The networking aspect is then grown through finding other users who have similar interests within the Socl service.
Will this overtake Facebook as a key business tool? No, well not at the moment – unless you are targeting academics and students and wish to engage in potential customers who are interested in a particular topic area, So.cl in its current form is unlikely to be of interest to you. But it definitely signals that Microsoft is serious about social media and given they have recently added social features to Bing, social is a big area to watch from Microsoft in the future.
