Let’s face it: people love things that are popular.  You don’t need to be a consumer psychologist to be able to confirm that this is true: just think back to when you were a kid. What was popular depended on what the “cool kids” had rather than on any objective measure of the product’s features.

If you’re either a business with a high turnover of different products or a small business starting out, then the “best sellers” built in tool on your ecommerce website might more reflect the products you were testing the site with when you set it up, than the actual best selling products in your industry.

A workaround to this is to use the featured products section of your website to highlight the best selling products in your industry manually. Rename your featured products to something like “Best sellers”, “Most Popular” or “Hot movers” and you’re both better reflecting what actually is a popular product in your industry, and talking straight to customer’s built-in psychological desire to “keep up with the Joneses” and have what the cool kids do.
