Published on July 26, 2011 Shopping cart for building an online store – getting started
Choosing the right shopping cart is a big part of your online store, as your shopping cart software is the engine room behind your ecommerce website. There are a lot of decisions to make to choose the one that’s best for your type of business, but once the decision is made, how do you get started?
Hosted shopping cart solutions like Ozcart® take the building part out of the equation, as the cart provider will physically get your store on to the Internet and set it up with the design that you have chosen from the design collection. If you choose a cart with us, we will also personalise that design for your business, by changing the colours and graphics of the design for your business – and in the case of designs with rotating gallery sliders, design those for you too. So when you get your site back, it’s ready to do the five main things you’ll need to do to get the site selling:
- Load your products and prices including adding your product images to the site
- Choose and configure your postage/freight method(s)
- Choose and configure your payment method
- Write your content pages: about us, privacy policy, terms and conditions, extra info pages relevant for your business
- Test your cart checkout experience to make sure it’s all working and work with your cart provider to correct any issues.
One important part of this process is getting your product images loaded. We strongly recommend that you make all of your product images the same size – adding padding to the images that are too small and scaling down the images that are too big. Having a standard size of your images will ensure they are displayed correctly on your shopping cart design and look neat and professional when customers visit your website.
No matter what you do online (or offline) you should always test it before you start advertising and selling – because you need to understand the experience that your customers go through when buying products (so you can confidently ask any questions that they may have), and resolve any issues that you encounter before a customer complains or votes with their feet.
