Most businesses starting an online shop will advertise with Google Adwords at some point to generate “instant traffic” and promote their business’ point of difference directly against their competitors. Does it also make sense to use Google Adsense on your website?
If your business model is using paid advertising to generate revenue then there’s no question that Adsense makes sense. That said, you need to be aware that Google takes into account where on the page your advertising is located, and if it’s mostly in a prominent place on your website and doesn’t require little or any scrolling to see that advertising then you may be penalised. In an online shop, the whole objective of your website is to push people through to the checkout process so sending customers to another site might make sense to you in the short term, but it does not make sense in the long run.
Those who are for Adsense on a shopping cart website say that customers are fickle and spend a long time shopping around before they buy, so no matter where they go on the Net, it’s not likely they’ll buy when they get to your site. It is true that customers are more fussy and shop around for a deal before they buy, but not every customer will do this and if you allow advertising for other companies you may send someone away who might have otherwise bought from you. Do you see department stores advertising local markets or trade fairs on the grocery shelves? No, because as soon as you give a customer the opportunity to go elsewhere they may just do that.
If you are using Ozcart as a product showcase (for example if you’re a wholesaler or exclusive distributor), then the argument is different as customers may not be able to buy from you anyway or may wish to buy from a stockist in their local area. In this case you can use Adsense to generate more revenue on your website with less risk of driving a potential customer to another supplier.

If you are using Adsense make sure you go into your options and exclude the URLs of your competitors or you may end up advertising your direct competition, which is not a good look!
