Published on September 12, 2010 Twitter tip: chooose who you follow wisely
A lot of business users of Twitter spend a lot of time building followers to their account because an active list of real Twitter followers are a potential list of even more active buyers on their website. What is often overlooked is who they are actually following themselves.
Too many businesses just follow others blindly in a reciprocal following arrangement and don’t really realise that they could be getting more from Twitter by selective following. Here is how selective Twitter following be a much better marketing strategy for their business in the long run.
Why you shouldn’t auto follow
It’s too easy to just follow another Twitter user because they follow you. While this is a good community building and collaborative approach to using your Twitter account, it’s benefits are more evident for personal rather than business account. This is because that when you follow someone their Twitter posts are added to your Twitter stream – which can clutter the messages that are shown to the people who are important to you: your customers.
How to choose who to follow
You should use the same criteria to choose people to follow on Twitter as you would to choose a new employee or a representative of your company in the media. Choose people or businesess who reflect the same ideaology and values as your business, choose people or businesses you respect and consider professional. And don’t forget to take a look at their Twitter posts before deciding to follow them. Would you be happy seeing their posts in your Twitter stream?
If the answer to the above questions is yes, then you’ve found a good candidate for a selective follow and someone to follow who can actually help your business by publishing comments on topics that are of relevance to you and your business’ philosophy and viewpoint on the world.
