The recent changes to Google’s ranking method, which they have codenamed “Panda”, will make it harder for websites to rank on key terms when they have duplicate content. While this update is not live in Australian search engines yet, it will mean that unique product descriptions will be absolutely essential for ecommerce sites moving forward.
Using product descriptions from product data feeds by manufacturers or distributors will potentially affect the ability of your online shop pages to rank except on paid advertising websites like price comparison sites. Your homepage will still rank as your site will not have duplicate content, but product descriptions that are duplicates of your competitors could disappear from search engines in spite of whatever else you are doing to promote it.
The upshot is this and critical for shopping cart websites: if you are running an ecommerce website, to get the best result from your search engine marketing efforts, write unique product descriptions.
If you are using non-unique descriptions, change them now before this update reaches Australia.
