Managing stock by product variant

Managing stock by product variant

If you’re an online shop like a clothing store where your products are available in colours and sizes, then you won’t want to have to set up separate products for each colour and size combination that you have. That’s because if you sell your women’s dresses in sizes 8, 10 and 12 but the dress comes in both red and black, then you will have six different combinations of dress sizes which you could have stock of. If you had 10 dresses in stock you might only have 2 red size 8s, 3 red size 10s, 1 red size 12 and 6 black size 8s, with black size 10 and 12 sold out. Managing your stock levels on just the total number of dresses you have in stock would lead you to having customers buying dresses that you don’t have.

You can set up stock levels for each product option combination. So you could set up your stock in your admin area as follows:

  • Red 8s: 2
  • Red 10s: 3
  • Red 12s: 1
  • Black 8s: 6
  • Black 10s: 0 (sold out)
  • Black 12s: 0 (sold out)

As each item sells out, the cart will reduce the stock level of that option combination and the total number of stock items for that product. If an item combination is sold out, when this is chosen by customers on the front end, then the cart will not allow that combination to be added to the cart.

Option stock levels can be configured in Ozcart’s admin and managed manually as well (for example, if you sell an item offline you can adjust just the combination that has changed).
